Eyjafjörður's whale population peaks between May and September, when humpbacks migrate north to feed on herring and capelin schools. Sightings cluster near Grímsey Island and the fjord's central basin, where depths reach 200 meters. Operators working out of Hauganes prioritize smaller vessels — typically rigid-hulled inflatables carrying twelve to eighteen passengers — to reduce engine noise and maximize proximity to surfacing whales. The geothermal beach component operates year-round, though winter bathers contend with sub-zero air temperatures and January's four-hour daylight window.
